Montessori Inspired Gifts For A New Baby

Are you looking for the perfect baby gift, but don’t want something emblazoned with an unknown cartoon character or made of flimsy plastic? Whether it’s for a newborn, to celebrate a baby’s birthday or ‘just because’; here are some charming, Montessori inspired gifts that both babies and parents are sure to love.

Wooden Toys

Babies toys these days are usually made of a cheap plastic with loud noises, flashing lights and some kind of technology integrated into them. Sure, these might grab a baby’s interest for a while but they’re rarely made from good materials and are a bit of an assault on the senses for everyone else. Why not take it back to basics and gift some beautiful wooden toys? The wooden toys from Baba Me are natural and organic so you don’t have to worry about nasty chemicals, and there are plenty of developmental options that a baby will enjoy just as much as a noisy, flashing monstrosity! Our children are being born into a very technological world, and it’s not uncommon for a toddler to be able to work a phone or tablet these days- but it’s not to say that more traditional toys have to take a backseat. These are things that generations before us would have played with and enjoyed; not only do wooden toys look cute but they take us back to a simpler time.

Hand Knitted Clothing

Babies have incredibly porous skin which means any chemicals in their clothing can easily leech through their skin and be damaging to their tiny bodies. Take cotton for example, if you choose non-organic cotton this would have been treated with pesticides and herbicides which still stick around even after washing. Using organic materials is important, and one way you can do this is by knitting your own baby clothing as a gift. Just be sure to choose organic wool (these sheep won’t have been exposed to any chemicals) and be careful sewing on things like buttons or embellishments which can be a choking hazard. Sure, you could go out and buy a perfectly nice outfit from a shop but if you want a special and meaningful gift, put your knitting skills to good use and create something.

Traditional Books

Finally, what could be more wonderful than gifting a book containing magical stories that we all grew up hearing as children. Of course, these days parents can read books from the ipad or even play a bedtime story audiobook, but there’s nothing quite like cosying up at bedtime with a traditional book and hearing a fairy tale or story. Something like this will always make a wonderful gift.
