The arrival of spring! It seems that Spring is finally here (at least considering London’s weather). The sun is shining and it’s making us smile. With the weather getting warmer here are some ideas how we are celebrating Spring. I have put together few new Montessori inspired activities on Mia’s shelf. On our shelf we have:

Insects Wooden Puzzle – Lovely bright pieces, perfect for little hands. My daughter loves them.

Flower Arranging – I put for Mia her first flower arranging activity. This activity is very simple for toddler who is 20 months old or even younger. Have your child carry the tray with all the materials to a table. She will sit in front of the tray and you should sit to her right if you are right-handed, to her left if you are left-handed. Fill the jug with a small amount of water. Demonstrate how to carefully pour the water from the jug to the vase. Show her/him how to wrap the fingers of her/his right hand around the handle (her pointer and middle finger will be wrapped around the handle while her thumb rests on top of it). Have her support the other side of the pitcher with the pointer and middle fingers of her left hand. Allow her/him to carefully pour the water from the jug to the vase.

If there is a spill, that’s okay! It’s just an opportunity for your child to learn that she/he will need to take more care next time and also to take responsibility in cleaning up after herself/himself. Let her/him repeat as many times as she/he’d like– which will probably be a lot! After that show her/him how to arrange flowers into the vase. My daughter absolutely loves this activity.

Paper Flower Craft – Using a variety of colours of Construction Paper, cut the following shapes: long, skinny rectangles, triangles, circles and ovals and leaf shapes. Put the paper pieces in a tray (or even divided tray is better idea) add a glue stick. Invite your child to table and demonstrate activity.

Books About Spring –  there are so many lovely books but I picked those:

Spring Seasons) by by Child’s Play (Author), Ailie Busby (Illustrator)

Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt by Kate Messner

Pairs! in the Garden by Smriti Prasadam-Halls

And that’s it! There’s usually 3-4 of these out at one time, I rotate as Mia loses interest in what’s on the shelves, or if I notice that she is gravitating toward a specific skill.

Don’t forget to pin this for later!
