Teaching my children to identify their feelings was always one of my main goals. Why? Because it helps them hone a life-long skill. In almost every situation I’ve tried to address and talk about how my daughter feels! And I’ve started from very early age. You don’t have to wait until your children are school aged. Toddlers/preschoolers can talk about feelings too. Start simple with three basic feelings: sad, happy, mad.

Other day I have discovered the children’s book TODAY I FEEL… by Portuguese author Madalena Moniz, in which a little boy feels different emotions from A to Z — like adored, excited, nervous and strong. It has beautiful illustrations.

At bedtime, Mia and I cuddled up with the book and talk about different feelings some she understands others are more complex like ‘uncertain’ so I explained what the word meant.

Here are some more books about feelings that we love:

Ruby’s Worry by Tom Percival

Kind by Alison Green (Author), Axel Scheffler (Illustrator)
