HELP ME DO IT MYSELF.’’
Being a toddler is no easy thing. The toddler is aware of himself in his environment and desperately wants to be a part of it but he lacks the language to explain what it is that he would like to do. It is for his reason that Montessori environments are designed around the needs of the child. Toddlers love to help and they will find clothes, brooms, dust pans, mops, buckets and everything else they would ever need to help take care of their environment, all the perfect size for their hands.
They are encouraged to choose an activity to engage in and are supported to return it once they have decided that they have finished. The toddler is encouraged to dress themselves, feed themselves and make their own choices.
At this age the need for order is very strong. The toddler needs know where certain activities and objects are, it is important that everything has its place and that only one item at the time is removed or changed. This provides the toddler with sense od security and control.
