The Montessori materials are attractive, simple, child-sized and self-correcting. Most materials used are tactile and the children will learn through their senses. They will learn from simple to complex, always providing a challenge and a thirst for more.
Practical life activities feature heavily as children learn everyday skills, such as sweeping, pouring and wiping. Sensorial activities teach them to judge colours, weight, height, length, sounds, smells, shapes and textures.
Many of these early skills prepare children for mathematical skills and language and pre-writing skills. They are introduced to the alphabet through sandpaper letters feeling the shape of each letter and they listen to the sound each letter makes phonetically.
